"Clay Wars"

What do you do with 20-minute classes? Well, "Clay Wars," of course!

Students in grades K-5 participated in a game entitled "Clay Wars." After dividing the classes into four groups, each group was given the same amount of modeling clay.  The instructions--create a structure using the coiling method.  The group with the highest structure wins! However, if your structure falls over, you are disqualified. Each group came up with a plan/strategy and all members participated.  The results varied.  Some groups elected to build solid structures,with large bases and thick coils. Other groups created slender structures,with thin coils. By the end of each class, students were reminded of some of the concepts we've been discussing in earlier classes (texture, form, balance, etc.) while having fun collaborating with fellow classmates.

EveryArtist

On Octobery 23rd students at Denver Place Elementary, along with students from around the country, participated in an event to promote creative and critical thinking skills called EveryArtist.

                        Everyartist Live! is a national event created to give young artists a time, place
                        and community to create, share and enjoy art, while raising awareness of how
                        important creativity is to our future.
                        Everyartist.me was founded by nationally recognized artist Brendan O’Connell,
                        and is supported by leaders in education and businesses that understand how
                        important creativity and innovation are to everything we do.
                       Creativity is the foundation on which new ideas are built:
                       • Creativity is critical to developing minds;
                       • Participation in the arts improves problem solving abilities and is
                         correlated to higher test scores;
                       • Creativity is shown to increase motivation, cooperation, and self-esteem;
                       • A movement called STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) to
                       STEAM is emerging. STEAM adds Art+ Design into STEM. We need to
                       get ahead of the curve;
                       • The workforce of the future is facing some very complex problems that will
                       require creativity and innovation to solve.
                       Everyartist Live! helps organize kids across the nation to participate in a single
                       art project to inspire creative interpretations of a shared theme. This year, young
                       artists will produce original artwork based on the theme “My Favorite Story”.
                       Last year more than 230,000 children in 46 states across the U.S. shared a day
                       of imagination, creativity, and community — and in the process broke a world
                       record for the largest single-day art event in history.

Welcome Back!

I hope everyone had a relaxing and enjoyable summer and is ready for another great year of art at Denver and East End!  This summer has been a productive one for me.  I recently had a show of my artwork at the Art Academy of Cincinnati.  The show featured recent paintings done in the medium, egg tempera.  Also included in the show was a ceramic sculpture.  Please click on the link below to view my work!

Thanks and have a great year!
